A quick hit, speaking of back catalogs. Here is a great set, free and clear (you can also get it at the internet archive, although the download below has corrected tagging and artwork). Lê Quan Ninh’s work is always a hit on KiC, and here he is working in a duo. You can read more about the release here. My quick take on the record is it holds interest from beginning to end (no small feat at 50+ minutes), and is a higher fidelity look at Ninh’s drumming. I also like this as a comparison piece to the Ninh solo album I posted because it shows him reacting to other players, but in a more one-on-one setting, as compared to his group album we posted. I’ve warmed to drum solo albums, especially those by Chris Corsano. Still, I think the drum’s greatest contribution is its ability to put other sounds, or moments in music, in context, to frame them and segment them in a way to make them understandable. With playing as free as Altenburger’s (this is my first, I think, exposure to her playing), this is of immense help. Enjoy!
